About the Course

This is an introductory painting course designed for the absolute beginner to represent numerous subjects in painting with understanding and confidence. A series of painting exercises will introduce students to elements of sight, tone, composition, and color.  Focusing on the fundamentals, the first six weeks of the course deals with still life painting and monochromatic tones and the last six weeks will be dealing with the portrait and a full color palette. All sessions are in-person.

About the Instructor

Dan Pelonis

M.F.A. IN PAINTING, NEW YORK ACADEMY OF ART, 2005

Mr. Pelonis has 12 years of teaching experience at art schools and art programs at colleges and universities. An accomplished artist, Mr. Pelonis is a former assistant to Jeff Koons and an Elizabeth Greenshields grant recipient (2010). He is also an active painter, and his works have been accepted by numerous exhibitions in North America and internationally. www.danpelonis.com/about

What Will You Lean from the course?

Week 1:     Introduction to materials and acrylic painting basics.

Week 2:    Seeing shapes and tones in a still life painting.

Week 3:    Exploring monochromatic painting.

Week 4:    Lighting a still-life and understanding form.

Week 5:    Monochromatic form continued.

Week 6:    Introduction to Color and limited two-color palette

Week 7:    “Dead” Color palette and introduction to Portraiture

Week 8:    Light vs Pigment and exploring a three-color palette.

Week 9:    Three color palette continued

Week 10:   Introduction to a six color palette.

Week 11:    The Six color palette and beyond.

Week 12:   Final painting critique and slideshow.
